In the past year, I left a stressful situation to go somewhere I thought I'd be happier. The only thing that made me happier was a better commute and a fraction of the stress I was dealing with previously. Plus, I also left that micro-manager boss behind. However, I didn't take into account that I was switching industries into what has got to be the most dreadfully boring and complex industry out there. Oh... and it was a small company filled with people who had zero social skills.
Fast forward 8 months, and I'm squeezed out of said position which was a total blessing in disguise. I was absolutely miserable and felt like I was wasting away and going absolutely no where. I went on interview after interview for two months, and felt like I may end up accepting a position where I would be unhappy again just to bring in a paycheck... no bueno. Finally, I was contacted by a magazine and was told up front that they would only be able to offer me a salary significantly less than what I had been making the past several years... YIPES! But I've always dreamed of working at a magazine a la Jenna Rink (13 Going on 30) and Andie Anderson (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days)....
I just had a great feeling about this job despite the giant pay cut, and knew it had the potential to be something great. After coming in for the interviews, I fell even more in love with the idea of actually working there. As soon as I was offered the position I accepted it gladly and was so excited to get started.
In my first week alone, I volunteered to help with the 40+ kids who showed up on "Bring Your Kid to Work Day" and attended a Caribbean Cruise Mixer complete with fun drinks and a photo booth. I also participate in free yoga classes twice a week and have joined the employee activity committee which is currently working on the 007 Casino Royale Mixer coming up this Friday and our Summer Party being held at a country club next month. I have an amazing team and a boss who values me and my opinions, and I can't wait to see how I'll grow in this exciting company. I feel like I've finally found my career, and am no longer just working "a job". I have such a passion for all things fashion, beauty, and travel all of which fill up the pages of magazines whether it be online or print.
Now all I need is some Chanel....

Everyone has such interesting jobs that is too cool!
ReplyDeleteI wrote a post once about dream jobs. Would you take your dream job if it was a significant pay cut. Or would you rather have a job with a giant pay check and be miserable. I gotta say, I think the dream job for less money wins out. Plus, I'm a firm believer that starting at the bottom and working your way up, slowly but surely, is the key to success!! I'm so glad you found a position that makes you so happy!
